A late 1930s Herbert Terry 2-Step Anglepoise 1227 lamp in yellow and brown scumble painted finish.

The Anglepoise Original 1227 is one of the most recognisable examples of British industrial design. It was developed by engineer George Carwardine, who in the early 1930s devised a revolutionary spring-and-lever mechanism that allowed a lamp to be moved effortlessly and remain perfectly balanced in almost any position.

After refining his original four-spring design, Carwardine collaborated with the spring manufacturer Herbert Terry & Sons to create the three-spring Original 1227, launched in 1935. The lamp quickly became popular in homes, offices and workshops thanks to its flexibility and practicality.

Its distinctive silhouette has remained largely unchanged for more than ninety years and has inspired countless adjustable lamps, becoming an enduring icon of twentieth-century design and a celebrated example of British engineering ingenuity.

Rewired with brown twisted fabric flex and PAT tested.
