A very early 1930s Herbert Terry 3-Step Anglepoise 1227 lamp in crinkle black paint and chrome.
This lamp has a perforated shade with the original bakelite lamp fitting and combined switch. The 3 piece chrome lower fork is not equipped with the earth screw which was used on later 3-step lamps and makes this a very early and quite scarce model.
The Anglepoise lamp is one of the most iconic examples of twentieth-century industrial design. It was invented in 1932 by British automotive engineer George Carwardine, who applied principles from vehicle suspension systems to create a lamp with a unique spring-balanced mechanism. This innovative design allowed the lamp to be adjusted effortlessly and remain in almost any position.
The first commercial model, the Anglepoise 1227, was launched in 1935 and quickly gained popularity in homes, offices, workshops, and studios. Its timeless combination of functionality and elegance has made it a design classic, and it remains in production today.
