An early 18th century Dutch tin-glazed plate with a blue and white design in the Chinese style, circa 1700. (AF).

Dutch tin-glazed pottery, often called Delftware, emerged in the 16th century as Dutch potters sought to imitate expensive Chinese porcelain.

Centred in the city of Delft, artisans developed a technique using a white tin glaze to create a smooth, paintable surface. Blue-and-white designs became especially popular, inspired by imported Chinese ceramics.

By the 17th century, Delftware was widely produced and exported across Europe. Although its popularity declined in the 18th century due to competition from true porcelain, it remains an important symbol of Dutch craftsmanship and artistic exchange between East and West.
