La Rochelle tin glazed faince inkwell

An early 19th century La Rochelle faience tin glazed blue and white heart shaped double inkwell.
La Rochelle faience is a distinctive form of French tin-glazed earthenware produced in the Atlantic port city of La Rochelle from the late seventeenth century onwards. Influenced by the celebrated faience centres of Rouen and Nevers, La Rochelle potters developed their own decorative style, often featuring bold floral motifs, birds, chinoiserie designs, and vibrant blue, green, yellow, and manganese-purple enamels.
The city's thriving maritime trade helped spread both artistic influences and finished wares throughout France and beyond. During the eighteenth century, La Rochelle became one of the country's most important faience-producing centres.
Today, antique La Rochelle faience is highly prized for its colourful decoration, regional character, and historical significance.
