French folk art copper coquemar
7565
A large 18th century French folk art hand hammered copper coquemar on ornate fret cut legs.
A coquemar is a traditional French cooking vessel, typically made of copper, brass, or cast iron, characterised by its tall, cylindrical body, side handle, and often a fitted lid.
Originating in the medieval period, coquemars were used for heating water, preparing soups, stews, and other household dishes over an open fire. Their practical design allowed them to be suspended from a hearth crane or placed directly among embers.
Common throughout France and parts of northern Europe from the 16th to 19th centuries, coquemars are now prized by collectors for their rustic charm and historical significance. Examples can often be found in antique kitchens and museum collections.
