Vishnyakov papier-mâché jewellery box
7527
A 19th century Vishnyakov papier-mâché lacquered jewellery box, the lid showing a grand supper scene, circa 1870.
Vishnyakov lacquer ware refers to the finely painted decorative objects produced in the Russian village of Vishnyakov, part of the broader tradition of Russian lacquer miniature art.
Emerging in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these pieces were typically crafted from papier-mâché and coated with layers of black lacquer before being hand-painted with colourful scenes. Artists depicted folklore, fairy tales, troika sleighs, rural life, and floral ornamentation using delicate brushwork and gold highlights.
Vishnyakov ware shares similarities with the better-known schools of Fedoskino and Palekh, though it often features softer, more naturalistic imagery.
Today, surviving examples are valued for their craftsmanship and connection to Russian decorative arts history.
